Cuban Soul Food: Caña Oakland
I'm not sure who decided that diamonds are a girl's best friend, but I'm pretty sure they were lying because food is certainly the way to my heart. I mean, diamonds are nice and all, but you can't eat them sooo...LOL. Caña in Oakland certainly knows how to make a girl drool with their menu. Cuban food with a hint of soul, it doesn't get much better than that!
First Caña won me over with their bottomless mimosas, a brunch staple. But these weren't just any mimosas. While they do have the traditional orange juice and champagne blend they also have guava. Well, obviously I went for the guava which was delicious! Next, I ordered the arepa benedict which was fantastic. The dish consists of two poached eggs atop smoked salmon (optional), two corn cakes, and topped with hollandaise sauce paired with a side of roasted sweet potatoes and caramelized onions. Are you hungry yet because I certainly am #getinmybelly.
My boyfriend ordered the chicken and waffles, which I must say, one-upped me. There are two waffle options on Caña's menu for this dish. A savory waffle with white cheddar, smoked bacon, and green onion inside or the sweet potato waffle. He opted for the latter. He's a good man I'm telling you. I mean based on that choice alone I'd marry him, but let's stay on topic...HA! The waffle is topped with three large pieces of chicken, mango salsa, and syrup. Not a combination that I initially thought went together, but flavors and textures actually compliment each other really well. The saltiness of the chicken, the sweetness of the syrup, the pillow-like texture of the waffle, and the fresh crunch of the mango married each other flawlessly. We also ordered two sides of bacon because bacon is, well, bacon and egg whites to convince ourselves that we were eating somewhat healthy (lies).
If you ever find yourself in Oakland, CA I highly suggest trying out this place for yourself. I can't wait to go back! For more on Caña, visit their website.
Keep Inspiring!
